Power BI Specialist (Part-Time, 1099) Location: Hybrid – Houston, TX (Some On-site Required) Type: Contract / Part-Time (1099) Confidential Company About the Role: We’re seeking a Power BI Specialist on a part-time, contract basis to support a high-visibility client engagement in downtown Houston. You’ll work at the intersection of business and data—partnering with stakeholders to define metrics, model data, and deliver performant, trustworthy dashboards and self-service analytics in Power BI. This hybrid role requires on-site work with the client 1–3 days per week; the remainder can be done remotely. Initial commitment is roughly 10-20 hours/week, with the potential to scale based on performance and project needs. We are a small consulting firm working with a client, and this is a consulting role for this client. Key Responsibilities: • Engage with business stakeholders to translate operational needs into well-defined KPIs, measures, and visualizations. • Design and implement semantic models (star schemas), DAX measures, and Power Query transformations for robust, reusable datasets. • Build and iterate on Power BI reports and dashboards that emphasize usability, performance, and data trust. • Implement and manage Row-Level Security (RLS), dataset permissions, and content governance across workspaces. • Optimize dataset performance (e.g., model size reduction, aggregations, incremental refresh) and troubleshoot refresh/data gateway issues. • Collaborate with developers, data engineers, and product leadership to prioritize backlog items and deliver value in Agile cadences. • Establish best practices and documentation for modeling standards, naming conventions, and deployment pipelines. • Support UAT and stakeholder training, enabling self-service analytics while maintaining data quality and control. Qualifications: • 3+ years in a Power BI-focused role (BI Developer/Analyst), delivering production dashboards and datasets. • Expert-level DAX and Power Query (M); strong understanding of data modeling and time intelligence. • Proficiency with Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service (workspaces, gateways, incremental refresh, deployment pipelines). • Experience connecting to common sources (e.g., Azure SQL, SQL Server, SharePoint/OneDrive, Excel). • Solid SQL skills for profiling, joins, and performance-minded queries. • Clear communication skills with the ability to bridge business and technical teams and present to non-technical stakeholders. • Familiarity with Agile/iterative delivery. • Must be located in Houston, TX and able to commute downtown 1–3 days/week. • Background check required. Nice to Have: • Background in Oil & Gas or experience working with industrial clients. • Knowledge of accounting/financial reporting concepts and common KPI structures. • Tools: DAX Studio, Tabular Editor, Power BI deployment pipelines, version control (Git). • Azure data stack exposure: Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Synapse, or legacy SSIS. • Light scripting in Python or R for data preparation. • Power Platform experience (Power Apps, Power Automate) and embedding scenarios.
