Overview Highmark Health – Data Science Manager, AI Platforms and Services We are seeking a visionary and experienced Data Science Manager to lead our team of innovative data scientists within the AI Platforms and Services team. Reporting to the Director of AI Platforms and Services, this role focuses on research and development, guiding a team dedicated to exploring Generative AI to solve complex business problems and pioneer new solutions in healthcare technology. In this role, you will guide research on innovative applications of generative AI to solve business challenges, develop foundational frameworks such as Gen AI app/AI agent design standards, evaluation methods, and Responsible AI (RAI) principles, and oversee proofs of concept that lead to deployments. You will lead a team of 5 to 6 professionals, defining and executing the R&D roadmap for Generative AI foundations and aligning research with business objectives and emerging tech trends. The role requires knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), Python and R, and machine learning platforms (e.g., Sage Maker, Vertex AI). You will oversee the end-to-end process of building and testing AI prototypes, from data exploration to functional Gen AI modules, and act as the team’s subject matter expert on the latest AI research (LLMs, RAG, fine-tuning, agentic AI). You will partner with Software Engineering, Infrastructure, Product Management, and Design to ensure smooth research-to-production transitions and translate complex research into clear narratives for technical and non-technical stakeholders, including executive leadership. The AI Platforms and Services team builds foundational infrastructure and reusable components to empower teams to rapidly develop and deploy AI-powered solutions at scale, impacting operations and products. As the R&D leader, you will help drive business strategy through AI and accelerate time-to-market while minimizing risk. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES • Perform management responsibilities including hiring decisions, coaching and development, rewards and recognition, performance management, and staff productivity; plan, organize, staff, direct, and control day-to-day operations; develop policies and programs; may have budgetary responsibility. • Create and communicate the product/capability vision, strategy and roadmap across multiple products; own the backlog, refresh and re-prioritize based on value, articulate backlog items and acceptance criteria, and represent the capability in governance meetings. • Work with the business to understand questions and processes, oversee the identification and delivery of analytical solutions that deliver value in production. • Consult with the business to contextualize and translate results into clear written reports, presentations, and data visualizations; connect high-level problem specifications to analyses and business objectives; network to broaden stakeholder impact. • Research self-directed analytical skills and approaches; build relationships to transfer knowledge and maintain SME status; guide fellow data scientists and analysts on larger projects. • Other duties as assigned or requested. EDUCATION Required • Master's Degree in STEM or Bachelor's Degree with 3 years of relevant work experience in lieu of a Master's Preferred • Doctorate degree in STEM EXPERIENCE Required • 7 years of Data Analytics, Academic Research, and/or relevant work experience • 2 years of Data Analytics, Academic Research, and/or work experience (if PhD) To Include • 1 year of using large data sets • 1 year in predictive modeling or advanced statistics • 1 year presenting complex analytics to non-technical audiences Preferred • Proven experience leading and mentoring data science or AI engineering teams • Experience building and managing high-performing teams in a research-focused environment • Deep understanding of generative AI tools, architecture, and frameworks (AWS, Azure, GCP; Python, R; Sage Maker, Vertex AI) • Excellent verbal and written communication skills • Proven ability to communicate with cross-functional teams and executive leadership • Collaboration skills with technical teams, software development teams, data experts, and engineers • Ability to translate complex technical information to business stakeholders • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS Required • None Preferred • None SKILLS • Analytics • Agile • Stakeholder Management • Presentation • Communication • People Management • Project Management Travel 0% - 25% PHYSICAL, MENTAL DEMANDS and WORKING CONDITIONS Office-Based; may teach/training; travel as needed; lifting and other physical requirements as described in the original job description may apply.
