Market America, a product brokerage and Internet marketing company that specializes in One-to-One Marketing, is seeking an experienced Director of SQL Database Development for our IT team. Position Summary The Director of SQL Server Database Development will lead the creation, implementation, delivery and maintenance of Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL and other related SQL based technology systems for Market America and SHOP.COM Worldwide. This includes responsibility for SQL database development resources for extensive custom applications supporting business operations, and for operational reporting and data warehouse analytics. The Director will ensure the smooth and effective operation and 24/7 availability of the systems. Key Responsibilities: The Director of SQL Database Development is primarily responsible for: • Guide & strengthen SQL DB Teams, which consist of DBAs, DB developers, and BI/DW developers • Hire and train top talent • Establish clear expectations • Coach team to drive towards valued ‘consultant’ relationship with users of the database systems – both our application development teams and business end users • Pro-actively manage low performers • Motivate, mentor and lead the application engineering talent • Manage SQL database systems and development to deliver technology solutions in support of business strategy and growth • Manage a broad portfolio of data technology projects across many countries • Lead with technical expertise in the development of database and data warehouse systems and applications • Evolve a database-specific, agile delivery model that employs a collaborative, open and prompt interaction between intent providers and technology execution • Collaborate with stakeholders to plan and prioritize software and system deliveries, assembling releases and overall IT roadmap strategic plans • Work with stakeholders in the business to identify and define the next opportunities and drive a game changing strategy, driven by technology, to deliver those opportunities • Effectively manage third party vendors and suppliers • Leverage understanding of technical architectures, capacity planning, performance analysis, tools requirements, automation, and product implementation plans • Research new tools and technologies for use within the team • Lead triage of incidents determine Root Cause and creating lasting solutions • Lead and manage and modernize the Market America Data Warehouse system to provide reporting and analytics for business operations and decision support systems • Provide relational database design expertise in a fast paced, ecommerce application development environment • Provide input to a chief technology officer or chief information officer regarding company data standards and practices • Produce and maintain capacity, HA and DR plans, to ensure Business Continuity • Partner in the development of IT roadmap and project solutions • Work with IT Leadership to define key strategic goals and projects. • Dynamically adjust plans, to meet business needs • Ensure solutions are in alignment with roadmap • Communicate the roadmap, internally & externally • Monitor & improve processes • Develop KPIs for team and system performance • Own & work on Continuous Improvement of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) • Ensure the priority of deliverables & delivery schedules are clear • Drive adoption/improvement of processes & improvements (e.g., time tracking & incident response) Qualifications: • Education: BS/BA Degree in Computer Science, Business or related field • Management Experience: 10+ years leading technical groups • Technologist: Strong engineering and technology background with the ability to go deep into technology solutions (ability to roll-up sleeves is crucial for success) • Motivated: Must have deep technical credibility with engineering organizations and ability to recruit top talent • Passionate: Can bring energy and enthusiasm to the job and organization • Entrepreneurial: Flexible, resourceful, figure-it-out-and-get-it-done mentality • Communicator: Excellent listener; proven collaborator with superiors, peers and staff • Achiever: Consistently attains/exceeds individual and team goals • Curious: Inquisitive individual that likes to learn about existing code-bases/infrastructure, business processes & emerging technologies • Bold: History of taking smart risks and aggressively leading through change • Extensive experience of managing multiple, large enterprise-class Microsoft SQL servers for High Availability, Business Continuity, Disaster Recovery and Security • Experience with advanced SQL Server management functionality: Replication, Log Shipping, Change Data Capture, Clustering and Always on Availability groups • Practical experience in monitoring and tuning high throughput SQL Servers to provide a high performance and high availability service • Strong knowledge of database modelling and programming techniques for both OLTP and OLAP environments; including T-SQL, stored procedures, and SSIS or other ETL applications • Hands on experience managing reporting and visualization technologies including; SSRS, Tableau, PowerBI or similar • Experience with SQL Server in Amazon cloud or/and Azure platform is a plus • Leadership: Experienced leader that can manage remote & local teams/portfolios, solve problems and empower employees to achieve success in a fast-paced organization • Platform Expertise: Experience with modern application architectures such as Microservices, Event Streaming, Stream Analytics, and Hybrid Cloud, as well as multiple data storage technologies (MS SQL, MySQL, NoSQL, Couchbase, UniVerse, Data Lakes, Column Store, etc.) will all be a big plus.
