Job Title: Senior Microsoft Database Administrator (Locals Only Austin, TX) Location: Austin, TX (Hybrid Local Candidates Only) Duration: 12+ Months Contract Job Description: We re seeking a highly skilled Senior Microsoft Database Administrator/Developer with 10+ years of experience in Microsoft Access and cloud-native SQL platforms. This role focuses on migrating legacy MS Access databases to modern, high-performance SQL environments in the cloud. The ideal candidate will be an expert in database design, schema transformations, ETL development, and performance optimization, while guiding program users and stakeholders through a seamless data migration and transition process. Work Schedule: • Remote: Monday Wednesday • Onsite: Thursday & Friday • Local candidates to Austin, TX only. Relocation candidates will not be considered. Key Responsibilities: • Lead the migration of legacy Microsoft Access databases to modern SQL-based cloud platforms (Azure SQL, AWS RDS, PostgreSQL, etc.). • Analyze existing Access data models, design normalized SQL schemas, and execute schema refactoring to optimize performance and scalability. • Develop and implement ETL pipelines (using SSIS, Azure Data Factory, AWS DMS) for seamless data extraction, transformation, and loading. • Design data validation checks, cut-over plans, and rollback strategies for smooth production transitions. • Create and maintain migration runbooks, technical documentation, and data dictionaries. • Collaborate with program users to ensure accurate translation of business requirements into technical solutions. • Develop and optimize queries, stored procedures, triggers, and indexes for high-performing SQL databases. • Provide training and knowledge-transfer sessions to stakeholders and technical teams. • Troubleshoot performance bottlenecks, monitor query execution plans, and recommend solutions for optimization. • Ensure security, compliance, and integrity of migrated data across all environments. Required Skills & Qualifications: • 10+ years of experience designing and maintaining advanced Microsoft Access databases (tables, queries, forms, reports, VBA automation). • 10+ years of relational database design including normalization, ER modeling, and schema refactoring. • Proven experience migrating legacy Access databases to cloud-native SQL platforms such as Azure SQL Database/Managed Instance, AWS RDS, or PostgreSQL. • 8+ years of experience developing ETL workflows with SSIS, Azure Data Factory, or AWS DMS. • 8+ years of experience preparing migration runbooks, technical documentation, and data dictionaries. • Expertise with RDBMS admin tools such as TOAD, SSMS, SQL Developer. • Skilled in query performance tuning, batch processing, and troubleshooting execution plans. • Strong understanding of data security, compliance, and best practices. Preferred Skills: • Experience with CI/CD tools (GitHub, JIRA) and Agile development methodologies. • Proficiency in data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau. • Prior experience with State of Texas agencies. • Experience in Healthcare or Public Health data environments.
