Position Summary As a Principal Data Scientist for Walmart Global Tech, you will have the opportunity to drive data-derived insights across a wide range of retail and finance divisions by developing advanced statistical models, machine learning algorithms, and computational methods based on business initiatives. You will direct the gathering of data, assess data validity, and synthesize data into large analytics datasets to support project goals. You will build and train AI/ML models for replication in future projects. You will communicate recommendations to business partners and influence future plans based on insights. About Team The data science team at the Enterprise Business Services Pillar focuses on using the latest research in machine learning, statistics, and optimization to solve business problems. We mine data, distill insights, extract information, build analytical models, deploy machine learning algorithms, and use the latest technology to empower business decision-making. We work with engineers to build reference architectures and ML pipelines in a big data ecosystem to productize solutions. Our work aims to optimize Walmart operations, improve business practices, and enhance the customer experience. Your Opportunity Drive data-derived insights across a wide range of retail and finance divisions by developing advanced statistical models, ML algorithms, and computational methods based on business initiatives. Direct the gathering of data, assess data validity, and synthesize data into large analytics datasets to support project goals. Build and train AI/ML models for replication in future projects. Communicate recommendations to business partners and influence future plans based on insights. What You Will Do Consult with business stakeholders regarding algorithm-based recommendations and develop these into actionable business decisions. Partner with the Senior Manager and Director of Data Science to drive data science adoption in the domain. Guide data scientists across multiple sub-domains to ensure on-time delivery of ML products. Drive DS/ML best practices, ML Ops practices, resource utilization, reusability, and multi-tenancy. Lead multiple complex ML products and guide senior tech leads in the domain. Identify complex business problems solvable with advanced ML and translate business requirements into strategies and projects. Define deliverables, establish success criteria, and measure the impact of ML products. Evaluate model performance metrics and ensure documentation and testing are maintained by the team. Apply a product mindset to build, scale, and deploy end-to-end data science products. Collaborate with associates in other regions to deliver high-quality, business-driven analytics solutions. What You Will Bring Bachelors, Masters, or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field with 10-15 years of relevant experience (Educational qualifications may vary by role). Minimum 10 years of experience as a data science technical lead; ability to lead multiple data science projects end-to-end. Deep experience in building data science solutions in areas such as fraud prevention, forecasting, inventory management, recommendation, assortment, price optimization, etc. Strong experience in machine learning (classification, regression, NLP, forecasting, unsupervised models, optimization, graph ML, causal inference, Gen-AI) and deployment. Experience with Python and/or R; proficiency with Python, PySpark; experience with GCP/Azure; Vertex AI, Kubeflow, and model deployment. Experience with big data platforms (Hadoop/Hive/MapReduce), GPU/CUDA for computational efficiency. Optional background in Gen-AI including embedding generation, vector databases, LLM integration, retrieval-augmented generation, and governance. Preferred Qualifications Data science, ML, optimization models; PhD in related fields; publications or active peer review in journals/conferences. Experience with open source frameworks (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch). Background in accessible digital experiences and knowledge of WCAG 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and inclusive design practices.
