The Junior Data Scientist develops and implements a set of techniques and analytics applications to transform raw data into meaningful information using data-oriented programming languages and visualization software. Key Responsibilities Data Analysis and Mining • Apply data mining, data modeling, natural language processing, and machine learning techniques • Extract and analyze information from large structured and unstructured datasets • Transform raw data into meaningful information using data-oriented programming languages • Support development of statistical models and analytical frameworks • Assist in identifying patterns and trends in Navy maintenance and operational data Data Visualization and Reporting • Visualize, interpret, and report data findings • Create dynamic data reports and dashboards • Develop charts, graphs, and visual representations of analytical results • Support creation of executive-level presentations and briefings • Generate standard reports summarizing business, financial, or performance data Data Analytics Tasks • Collect business intelligence data from available industry reports, public information, and field reports • Create business intelligence tools or systems, including design of related databases and spreadsheets • Generate standard or custom reports for review by managers and stakeholders • Maintain library of model documents, templates, or other reusable knowledge assets • Provide technical support for existing reports, dashboards, or other tools • Apply mathematical or statistical techniques to address practical issues in financial, program, and risk management • Collaborate in development or testing of new analytical software and techniques • Research new products or analytics to determine their usefulness • Check source data to verify completeness and accuracy • Compile statistics from source materials and display them appropriately • Compute and analyze data using statistical formulas and computers or calculators • Enter data and maintain databases for use in analyses or reports • Select statistical tests for collecting and analyzing data System and Database Support • Assist with maintenance and updates of Navy information systems (NMD, NDE, EDW, ERP) • Support data integration and quality assurance processes • Help maintain data integrity and security protocols • Assist with database management and optimization tasks Education Requirements • Minimum: Associate's degree in math, science, engineering, or related field • Alternative: Minimum of 5 years of professional experience related to the labor category in lieu of degree requirement • Preferred: Bachelor's degree in math, science, engineering, or related field Experience Requirements • Required: 1 year of professional experience related to labor category • Preferred: More than 4 years of professional experience related to labor category Required Qualifications • Secret security clearance (interim acceptable) • Knowledge of data analysis principles and statistical methods • Proficiency with data analysis software and programming languages • Understanding of database concepts and data management • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy • Ability to work under supervision and as part of a team Technical Skills • Programming Languages: Python, R, SQL, or similar data analysis languages • Data Analysis Tools: Excel, Tableau, Power BI, or similar visualization tools • Statistical Software: SPSS, SAS, or similar statistical packages • Database Systems: Experience with relational databases and query writing • Microsoft Office Suite: Advanced Excel, Word, PowerPoint • Navy Systems: Familiarity with Navy data systems (ERP, EDW, NMD, NDE) preferred • Version Control: Basic understanding of Git or similar systems Capabilities Shows competent skills associated with the labor category, performs moderately complex tasks independently and complex tasks with some guidance and feedback, and completes tasks on time and to a standard that is satisfactory.
