The Systems Administrator III leads the design, implementation, and management of local and wide-area networks for Shelby County Government, ensuring maximum uptime and providing supervision to network engineers. This role requires extensive experience in network management and advanced troubleshooting.
Position Summary The Systems Administrator III acts in a lead capacity to design implement and manages local and wide-area networks to ensure maximum uptime for users on the Shelby County Government’s network and provide supervision, leadership, and support for subordinate network engineers. Pay Grade: 57 Salary Commensurate with Experience and Education Minimum Qualifications 1. Five (5) years' experience in a lead capacity, of which three (3) years should be in complex experience in planning, configuration deployment, documentation, administration of L2 & L3 networks, network security systems, network management systems, and advanced troubleshooting of complex network issues; AND 2. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, information technology, or a closely related field; OR 3. An equivalent combination of related education, and/or experience. 4. PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Supervises the operation and maintenance of the software infrastructure components of the County’s multi-tier systems and other software platforms that host external and internal customer-facing services. 2. Designs and supervises the utilization and maintenance of the network infrastructure components that provide the County with network connectivity of all servers, workstations, telephony equipment, fax machines, and other network appliances. 3. Supervises the research and evaluation of technologies and solutions that provide the integration, data exchange, and other supporting services utilized by the County’s hosted software. 4. Designs and supervises collaboration efforts with Datacenter, Applications, and Customer Services on network-related projects to support their operating systems. 5. Develops, writes, and administers standards and procedures associated with the implementation, Incident resolution, and support of network technologies. 6. Develops, writes, and administers standards and procedures for the installation, monitoring, and problem-solving of the network system and application environments. 7. Supervises the monitoring of network systems performance and function, the dissemination of alert and fault indicators, and the development and implementation of proactive reporting. 8. Demonstrates good interpersonal and communication skills in all work efforts with customers, management, and staff. 9. Provides high level of project planning/scheduling and supervision of project teams through use of coaching, training, and evaluations. 10. Prioritizes and manages multiple projects effectively while meeting aggressive deadlines. 11. Executes RFP processes, evaluates RFP responses, and provides purchase recommendations. 12. Assists in budget recommendations to management and future needs analysis for acquisition. 13. Assists in presenting to management recommendations related to purchasing and installing hardware and software. 14. Performs other related duties as required or directed. KSAs 1. Highly Proficient knowledge in project planning, design, and implementation of enterprise LAN/WAN solutions. 2. Highly Proficient knowledge in implementing enterprise datacenter route/switch designs; Cisco and Arista experience preferred. 3. Highly Proficient knowledge of Spine-and-Leaf architectures, routing protocols, underlay and overlay networks (BGP, EIGRP, ISIS, OSPF, VXLAN, EVPN, etc.). 4. Highly Skilled in Wireless (Wi-Fi 6 and above) network design (Cisco and Aruba experience is preferred). 5. Highly Skilled in complex problem solving in large-scale network environments and ability to successfully manage multiple network projects with varying priorities. 6. Highly Skilled in working with WAN services (Metro Ethernet, leased lines, xDSL, etc.). 7. Highly Skilled in cable plant infrastructure (copper and fiber). 8. Highly Skilled in the planning, configuration, and support of network Management technologies (SNMP, RMON, Netflow, SFlow, NetOps, etc.). 9. Highly Skilled in the planning, configuration, and support of network security technologies (Firewalls, IPS, VPN, SSL Decryption, NAC, PKI , MFA, etc.). 10. Highly Skilled in the planning, design, and deployment of enterprise network components (VOIP, QOS, NAT, DHCP, DNS, Application Delivery Controller, virtualization, containers, Microsoft AD Services, etc.). 11. Highly Skilled in Cloud Network architectures (Azure, AWS, or other public clouds experience is preferred). 12. Highly Skilled in Identity Management and Network Access Control (RADIUS; LDAP, SAML, Federation, IAM, etc.). 13. Highly Skilled in maintaining network and service reference documentation. 14. Ability to interpret flow charts, block diagrams, related material, and to conduct program tests. 15. Ability to establish and maintain production and quality control in reference to computer and network operations. 16. Ability to read, analyze, interpret technical procedures, and write reports and routine business correspondence. 17. Ability to demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills in all work efforts with customers, management, and co-workers. Special Requirements 1. Must be able to work on-call as required. 2.
