The College of Arts & Sciences System Admin and Infrastructure Team has an outstanding opportunity for a Departmental Computing Manager to join their team. The role will provide technical leadership for the CAS (College of Arts and Sciences) Sys Admin and Infrastructure Team. This is a hands-on leadership position; technical acumen is essential. The Manager of IT Infrastructure will be responsible for a small team who perform highly critical systems administration, network infrastructure, security and overall IT infrastructure in support of systems both unique and common across the college. The position will be responsible for developing policies and procedures that will impact the broader college’s IT security and IT infrastructure. The manager is a member of the CAS IT Leadership Team and will lead/manage projects, perform systems analysis, write policies and procedures, monitor and approve budgetary components, provide service and process changes, implement Service Management practices, and continually promote service improvements. The position will also be responsible for establishing tactical plans and working collaboratively across diverse groups to ensure projects and services are aligned with University and College goals and requirements. Reporting to the College’s Director of Information Technology, the incumbent will be responsible for implementing a secure, scalable, and innovative computing environment while exploring and promoting ways that technology can improve staff and faculty user experience. Working independently and by guiding the work of a small team of IT subject matter experts, the team is responsible for supporting and implementing systematic and scalable infrastructure tool, systems administration, networking, and security and data compliance. This role will have budgetary approval authority. The role will also perform systems analysis and information security management as a critical function. This position provides technical expertise and support. You will work with your team to recommend appropriate solutions to meet the needs of the ever-changing security and computing requirements of faculty and administration alike. The position requires someone with strong technical acumen and ability to lead a diverse team of technical subject matter experts with varying areas of expertise. About us: CAS IT’s core mission is to provide critical IT support to the faculty and staff in the college. We are an agile and collaborative team working to continually make technology less cumbersome for our customers while ensuring our solutions are secure, scalable, and in service of the College and UW’s mission of teaching and research. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Management and Leadership • Hire, train, direct, manage, and mentor IT staff who provide support to the College and departments systems and infrastructure. • Manage licensing for specialty software. • Label and track internal and capital assets, using SharePoint, Workday, and the Equipment Inventory Office to maintain inventory of all infrastructure equipment. • Monitor information security best practices and work with the team to identify areas that need to be improved upon. • Liaise with UW-IT and the UW OIS to ensure we maintain the highest level of compliance with UW policies around data privacy, security, overall infrastructure best practices • Perform on a need basis, systems analysis, information security management, and network infrastructure changes in partnership with the senior infrastructure team. Consulting and Support of Administration, Faculty and Staff • Troubleshoot, consult, and advise IT colleagues, faculty and staff in the Dean’s Office and Academic CAS Departments, providing support as needed. • Manage a team that support diverse hardware and systems in support of academic, research, and administrative objectives. • Communicate complex technical concepts in a clear manner to non-technical users. • Manage reporting and metrics via the ServiceNow ticketing system. • Ensure that computer hardware and software is appropriate and reliable for the College, fulfilling the teaching, research, and operational needs of CAS. • Work with the Director of Information Technology to develop and administer a strategic plan for Infrastructure improvements across the college. Compliance/Security Management • Work with to ensure systems and hardware are compliant with UW Data Protection and security policies. • Follow the Equipment Inventory Office and Surplus Office protocols to ensure UW compliance with state-owned equipment. • Communicate regularly with Director of Information Technology to ensure compliance with CAS computing policies and UW APS 2.6. Administrative • Provide professional customer service to develop and administer the mission of the infrastructure team and CAS IT. • Conduct departmental outreach to understand needs of departments and opportunities to improve systems that will reduce the overall burden of labor for all. • Create training materials and knowledge-based articles to provide a consistent level of service. Minimum Requirements • Bachelor's Degree in Information Science/Systems, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience; plus • 4-5 years relevant work experience in a leadership or equivalent role. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Experience with: • Networking (LAN/WAN, firewalls, VPNs) • Server and storage systems (Windows/Linux, virtualization, vmware) • Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) • Cybersecurity frameworks and compliance (e.g., ISO 27001, NIST) • Strong leadership and communication skills (ability to both receive and provide feedback in a constructive and proactive manner) • Strategic thinking and problem-solving • Budget Planning: Experience with budgetary oversight, planning, and vendor negotiations. • Experience with budgeting and resource planning • Desire and willingness to keep abreast of emerging technologies and work in a rapidly evolving environment. • Able to lift or move up to 40 pounds of materials.
