General Definition of Work The director of systems administration, under minimal supervision, performs senior-level work with considerable decision-making discretion applying advanced subject matter knowledge, operational leadership, and oversight of multiple functional areas within technology services including endpoint management, identity and access management, security administration, MDM administration, and compliance. Position is responsible for implementing information technology (IT) strategies that are aligned with the district's educational goals, ensuring technology supports teaching and learning effectively. Employee performs advanced work to carry out Board of Education policies and procedures under the direction of the Executive Director of Network and Security. Essential Functions • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures • Lead, manage, supervise, and evaluate assigned programs/staff in the district • Recommend process improvements, automation, and optimization of IT systems • Apply project management procedures and best practices to IT projects including planning, implementation, and deployment • Effectively manage multiple large-scale cross-functional projects simultaneously • Oversee the administration and maintenance of IT systems including on-premises servers, directory services, device infrastructure, and cloud-based services • Manage and maintain a diverse fleet of endpoints ensuring they are properly configured with software, secured, and updated • Manage user accounts, permissions, and access controls across various systems and platforms, maintaining compliance with policies • Implement and enforce security policies and procedures to protect against unauthorized access, data breaches, malware, and other security threats • Conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments • Develop and implement patch management policies and procedures to ensure that all systems and software are kept up to date with the latest security patches and updates • Participate in the development of the department budget; monitor expenditures and allocate resources effectively • Manage relationships with consultants, technology vendors, and service providers • Coordinate and participate in the procurement of IT hardware and software; oversee the delivery of goods and services • Support IT staff and end-users by troubleshooting hardware and software issues, resolving technical problems, and providing guidance and training • Develop and maintain documentation such as system configurations and standard operating procedures • Collaborate to understand district technology needs and priorities • Communicate IT initiatives and updates effectively to the broader school community • Facilitate staff meetings and attend other related meetings as needed/required • Complete local, state, or federal surveys and reports accurately and promptly • Participate in professional development workshops and other meetings as required • Remain current on best practices, industry standards, and emerging technologies • Create an inclusive environment with positive communication/public relations • Perform related work as assigned or required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities • Comprehensive in-depth knowledge and understanding of the principles, practices, and procedures of public school system policies and technology programs • Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements applicable to school system technology • Thorough knowledge of school system enterprise operational systems • Thorough knowledge of security principles, practices, and technologies including firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, VPNs, encryption, and endpoint security solutions • Thorough knowledge of identity and access management (IAM) solutions, single sign-on (SSO) systems, and directory services (Active Directory, LDAP) • Through knowledge of Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) principles and best practices for IT service management • Skilled in systems administration including server administration (Windows Server, Linux/Unix), network administration (LAN/WAN, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP), and cloud-based services (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) • Skilled in endpoint management solutions such as SCCM (System Center Configuration Manager), Intune, Jamf, and Google Workspace Admin Console • Skilled in virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper-V), storage systems, backup and disaster recovery solutions, and database management systems • Skilled in analysis and problem-solving, with the ability to analyze complex technical issues, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions • Ability to successfully manage IT projects from conception to completion, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and meet technical requirements • Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needs • Ability to develop and monitor a budget • Ability to direct and evaluate the work of others • Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operations • Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships • Ability to problem-solve utilizing sound judgment • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business • Ability to develop related charts, graphs, reports, and records pertaining to school planning and strategy • Ability to take initiative and work independently • Ability to conceptualize, initiate, monitor, and evaluate new and/or current programs • Demonstrated ability to perform detailed work, planning, risk assessments, and associated risk mitigation actions • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including IT staff, school administrators, faculty, and vendors. • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team of IT professionals, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Education And Experience • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field required • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in systems administration, network administration, or a related field • Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate, Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert, Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, Microsoft Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate, Microsoft Certified: Teams Administrator, CompTIA Security+ preferred • Equivalent combination of education and experience Special Requirements • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license or ability to provide own transportation • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
