Overview We are looking for a talented and experienced Data Engineer / Data Solutions Architect to join our dynamic team. In this crucial role, you will design and implement enterprise data models, establish metadata governance frameworks, and develop ETL pipelines and analytics platforms to enhance data governance, performance measurement, and business intelligence solutions for the VA Office of Information Technology (OIT). Your deep expertise in data modeling, ETL development, and cloud data services will play a pivotal role in the success of federal data platforms and analytics systems. Responsibilities Your contributions will include: • Designing, building, and maintaining robust relational data models in SQL Server 2019+ to facilitate metadata governance, request handling, audit tracking, and version-controlled publishing. • Architecting multi-stage relational models to manage the metadata lifecycle, ensuring efficient intake submissions, staging, review, auditing, approval tracking, and final publishing structures. • Developing and maintaining SSIS packages and ETL pipelines for metadata ingestion, transformation, validation, and publishing processes to support sophisticated data warehouse architectures. • Utilizing hybrid cloud integration expertise with Azure SQL, Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Synapse Analytics, and Azure Fabric to craft scalable data pipelines and modernize platforms. • Collaborating closely with business analysts, Power BI developers, Power Apps developers, and stakeholders to understand requirements and convert functional business needs into innovative data solutions. • Building integrations using Power Platform (Power BI, PowerApps, Power Automate) with SQL Server and cloud data services, applying identity-based row-level filtering for enhanced submission-level security and role-based access. • Maintaining fully auditable data models, ensuring metadata change tracking, approval lineage, and governance version control are aligned with compliance regulations. • Conducting advanced performance tuning, query optimization, index management, and troubleshooting across extensive relational databases. • Documenting technical specifications thoroughly, including data dictionaries, ERDs, data flow diagrams, and system architecture diagrams to support governance and audit initiatives. Qualifications • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field with 5 - 8 years of relevant experience. • Over 8 years of SQL Server database development, data architecture, and ETL design experience. • Minimum of 5 years in data warehouse architecture, metadata governance, and analytics platforms. • Strong hands-on expertise with SQL Server 2019 Enterprise (on-prem), SSIS, T-SQL, and relational database design. • Experience with cloud platforms, particularly Azure or AWS. • Proficiency in Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Synapse Analytics, and hybrid cloud integration. • Familiarity with Azure DevOps or GitHub for version control and CI/CD automation. • Experience with Power Platform and SharePoint Online in enterprise solutions. • Knowledge of metadata-driven design patterns and compliance with federal regulatory standards. • Excellent documentation skills and strong analytical problem-solving ability. • Familiarity with federal compliance frameworks (ATO, FISMA, NIST 800-53, FedRAMP). • Team-oriented mindset and capability to meet quick turnaround requirements. • Experience using Agile methodologies and project management tools. Clearance Required: Ability to obtain and maintain a Suitability/Public Trust clearance. Preferred Skills and Experience • Experience with the Microsoft Fabric platform. • Exposure to MongoDB or other NoSQL databases. • Knowledge of scripting languages for automation, such as Python or PowerShell. • Prior work experience in federal data governance environments. • VA Data Analytic experience is a plus.
